Point Three - The Revelation
Signs of an Angel, Names of Angels, Angels in the Bible

A theophany is the manifestation of God as in the burning bush that Moses encountered. The epiphany was the manifestation of Christ as the light of the world as shone forth in the brilliant start that the three wisemen followed to find the baby Jesus. And this unit will introduce what is call the Angelophanies (plural OF Angelophany), the manifestation or revelation of the Angels as humanity’s helpers.
We begin with a true angel story.
<> STORY POINT
Many years ago, before I began my studies to become a Permanent Deacon in the Catholic Church, I had the opportunity to go to daily mass at my church – St. Ann’s Church. And in preparation for my studies, my pastor, Fr. Elmer Schmidt suggested that I do the readings at the masses that I attend.
I agreed, but in reading some of the Old Testament readings, I found it exceedingly difficult to pronounce many of the words. This was way before they had individual missalettes that parishioners could take home and study the Word of God. As a result, I became very frustrated and told Fr. Schmidt that I wish I had a book that contained all the readings for each day, all of the daily mass readings so I could practice the readings the night before. He listened carefully to my plight and told me to be patient.
That very same day, as we were crossing the street from the church to the parish offices, a very strange looking man approached us. He addressed Fr. Schmidt and said something like, “You probably don’t remember me, but I was a parishioner of yours many years ago when you were at a church in Appalachia.” Fr. Schmidt did not say anything as the man proceeded to talk. He said that he had a book that he was not using any more and that he wanted to give it to Fr. Schmidt in hopes that there might be somebody he knew who could use the book.
He handed Fr. Schmidt a small paper bag and turned around and left. We went into the parish offices, and as Father opened the bag, he smiled and handed me a book and said, “I think this was meant for you.” It was a St. Joseph’s Missalette that contained all of the readings for both daily mass and weekend masses. We both stared at each other and then looked out the window to see if we could see the strange looking man. No one was in sight.
As I reflected on what had occurred, there are two things that remain etched in my mind about this encounter. First, the small book that I received was not an ordinary book, paperback book. It was a beautiful, black leather book with gold leaf pages. It looked brand new and it was something I treasured for many years as I used it daily to practice my readings.
The second thing that I remember distinctly was that this man was a big man with a big white beard. As I look back, I can’t help but think that he resembled Santa Clause. But the most remarkable thing that I remember was his suspenders. They stood out clearly because they were rainbow-colored suspenders. And of course, as we discuss later, one of the signs of an angel is the sign of color or light. I do believe that this “Santa Clause” with his gift and his rainbow-colored suspenders was an angel.

Angelophanies – The Revelation
Angelophanies are the sudden dawning of a new light.
The moment the star shimmers,
and the ordinary is flooded with the extraordinary.
It is the trembling air when the presence is felt,
a revelation that shatters the mundane,
reminding us that the universe is alive with messengers,
and that awe is the first language of the soul.
What has been revealed will touch us as a metanoia.
And our lives will never the same.
For we have heard and saw and felt
the very presence of angels among us (Copilot/McCormick)
Scriptural Verse
“And the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy.’” (Luke 2:10)
“Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” (Luke 1:28
Historical Reflection
Joan of Arc claimed guidance from angels. St. Francis of Assisi saw visions throughout his life. In Islam, Gabriel revealed the Qur’an to Muhammed.

Angelophanies Defined
76. An Angelophany is the term used to describe an appearance or manifestation of an angel to human beings. The word comes from “angel,” added to the Greek word “phaino,” meaning “to appear.” There are two well known “-phanies” that have appeared in the Bible. The manifestation of God in the burning bush to Moses. This appearance of God is known as a “theophany.” And when the baby Jesus was revealed to the shepherds for the first time after his birth, which is referred to as the Epiphany. In religious studies, Angelophanies are significant events where angels are perceived to interact with people, often delivering messages, guidance, or performing acts on behalf of God.
The Significance of Angelophanies
77. Angelophanies hold significant meaning in theology and religious studies for several reasons. Listed below are some of these reasons.
78. Revelation and Divine Communication – Angelophanies are often seen as moments when God communicates directly with humanity. Angels function as messengers, delivering God’s will, guidance, or warnings. These encounters reinforce the idea that God is actively involved in human affairs and uses intermediaries to convey important messages.
79. Understanding the Spiritual Realm – The study of Angelophanies broadens our understanding of the spiritual world. It reminds believers that reality is not limited to what is visible and material but includes a realm of spiritual beings who play roles in the cosmic order and in individual lives. [bible.org]
80. Theological Reflection – Angelophanies enrich theological reflection by shedding light on the nature of God, the structure of creation, and the relationship between the divine and humanity. They help theologians explore concepts such as providence, spiritual warfare, and hierarchy of beings between God and humanity. [sact.ac.uk]
81. Biblical and Doctrinal Foundations – Angelophanies are found throughout the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, and are referenced in at least 34 books of the Bible. Their presence in scripture underscores their importance in the Biblical narrative and in the development of Christian doctrine. [bible.org]
82. Impact on Spiritual Life – Belief in Angelophanies influences the daily spirituality of believers. It fosters trust in divine protection, encourages prayer for guidance, and inspires awe at the mystery of God’s interaction with the world. [thewitness.org]
83. Cultural and Historical Significance – Historically, Angelophanies have shaped religious practices, art, and literature.. They have been central to popular piety an ascetic traditions, especially in early Christianity and medieval thought. [Cambridge.org]
84. Angelophanies are significant because they represent direct encounters with the Divine, deepen theological understanding, and have a lasting impact on faith, doctrine, and culture.
Examples of Angelophanies in the Bible
85. Hagar and the Angel – In Genesis 16, Hagar, the servant of Sarai, encounters an angel in the wilderness who comforts her and gives her instructions about her son, Ishmael.
86. Abraham and the Three Visitors – In Genesis 18, Abraham is visited by three men, one of whom is often interpreted as the Lord and the other two as angels. They announce the birth of Isaac and later proceed to Sodom.
87. Jacob’s Ladder – In Genesis 28, Jacob dreams of a ladder reaching to heaven with angels ascending and descending on it, signifying God’s presence and promise.
88. The Angel wrestling with Jacob – In Genesis 32, Jacob wrestles with a mysterious man, often interpreted as an angel, and receives the name Israel.
89. The Burning Bush and Moses – In Exodus 3, the angel of the Lord appears to Moses in a flame of fire out of a bush, calling him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.
90. The Annunciation to Mary – In Luke 1, the angel Gabriel appears to Mary to announce that she will conceive and give birth to Jesus.
91. The Angels at Jesus’ Tomb – In Matthew 28 and John 20, angels appear to the women at the tomb of Jesus, announcing his resurrection.
92. The Angel Delivering Peter from Prison – In Acts 12, an angel appears to Peter in prison, frees him from his chain, and leads him out to safety.
93. The beauty of Angelophanies is that they are not just appearances of angels that took place in the Bible, but Angelophanies are much more than that. Angels have appeared to humanity in many forms and in many ways.
94. Sometimes it is difficult to discern whether or not you are having an encounter with an angel or just another human being, or even the evil one. There are certain signs that you can look for to help you determine if your encounter is a true and holy angel sent from God.
Although we discussed the signs of an angel in a previous lecture, the following information pertains to a specific event in the realm of everyday life when we encounter strangers or experiences that are beyond the normal. In a sense, this is a review of what we learned before, but also relevant information that is added to our knowledge of angel signs.
Listed below are some common signs to watch for, to listen for, and to feel the presence of angels in your life.
Common Signs of an Angel
95. A common sign of angelic presence is the sudden feeling of peace or comfort. Many report an overwhelming sense of calm or reassurance during difficult times, which they attribute to angelic presence.
96. For some, the appearance of an angel is marked by some unexplained aroma or fragrance either before, during, or after an angel visitation. Smelling sweet scents like flowers or incense with no apparent source is often considered a sign of an angel.
97. If you have ever experienced finding feathers for no reason whatsoever, feathers appearing unexpectedly, then you are observing a beautiful sign that an angel is near. White fathers in unusual places is a classic symbol off angels.
98. If you are privy to the appearance of mysterious lights or orbs, or seeing flashes of light, spheres of light, or shimmering effects, then these can be interpreted as angelic manifestations. Along with light, the colors of a rainbow signify that there are angels near.
99. Some experience clear, gentle guidance or encouragement in their thoughts, which they believe comes from angels. These message may also present as voices or messages from your inner conscience. Sometimes the messages are clearly spoken and heard.

<> POETIC POINT
Angelophanies are sacred moments when the invisible steps forward,
when the eternal leans close enough to be felt.
They are the sudden shimmer in the ordinary.
The soft revelation that the divine has entered your life
Not with thunder, not with lightening,
but the gentle, warm glow of a distant star,
letting you know that you are in the midst,
of something that is sacred, something that is mystical.
Something that offers you light, hope, peace, and calm.
And everything is right with your world and beyond (Copilot/McCormick)

Note: The following poem referencing the signs of an angel was composed by Angela Day, a pseudonym or pen name used by the author of this textbook.
SIGNS OF AN ANGEL
Have you ever had an encounter with someone you didn’t know
And wondered if that meeting was with an angel or a foe?
Or maybe you’ve needed help because of some unexpected danger,
And right before your eyes, there appeared a sudden stranger.
And just as quickly as he appeared, he suddenly was out of sight,
But only after helping you and making things all right.
I’ll tell you a little secret that an angel told me true.
It’s how to know when angels are present when they’re near to you.
He said there are three things to watch for, three things you can be sure,
If the person that you’ve encountered has motives that are pure.
The first of these is the message, “Be not afraid,” or “Do not fear.”
Whenever you hear these lovely words, then an angel is always near.
The second sign you’ll feel -- it’s a gentle stillness in the air.
Whenever there’s peace and tranquility, you know an angel is there.
And the final thing to watch for is the presence of color or light.
And wherever there’s a rainbow, there’s an angel close in sight.
Courage, peace, and color, these are the marks of an angelic being.
And when you feel these things in your heart, it’s an angel you are seeing (Day/McCormick) -Angela Day
<> POETIC POINT
Angelophanies are the moments when God is revealed
through the revelation of His messengers.
When the eternal brushes against the temporal,
and suddenly, everything makes sense.
It is the moment in eternity where everything comes together,
and you are right and in order with all that is sacred and holy.
Revelation reveals itself to you.
And all is well! All is well (McCormick)!

<> A PRAYER
May revelation reveal itself when you need hope.
May the bright star of immortality that reaches from beyond,
envelop you like a warm blanket of serenity.
And in the midst of the unmistakable presence of things unknown,
may you feel the sacredness of space and time,
as they converge upon your needs,
and quietly fulfill that which was empty and alone.
May you know the blessedness of revelation of all that is true.
And know that this was meant for you. (McCormick)
