Point Four  – The Documentation

Looking at Angels Through the Eyes of the Arts

<> STORY POINT

As we begin our Module Four, which discusses the wide array of methods and materials that humanity has used and continues to use to document the presence of the angels on this earth.  Here is a beautiful, true story that happened to me about forty or fifty years ago, when my wife and I were newly married and our children were small.

One beautiful Saturday morning, our family took a road trip in our small family car to one of the large shopping malls that was located an hour or more away from our home.

We took our three children.  And as we strapped the two smaller twins in their car seats, the older daughter took her position between them in the back seat.  We joyfully set out to pick up school supplies and other essential that only the big malls could supply.

When we finished our essential shopping, we decided to walk around the mall and enjoy the variety of stores that were there.  As the children enjoyed looking at the toy stores, my wife and I enjoyed looking at the furniture stores that offered different pieces of décor.

I can remember very distinctly going into one of the stores and instantly being drawn to a painting of Raphael’s two little cherubs.  For some reason, this painting in particular has followed me throughout my life. It seems as though every chapter of my life contained this painting portrayed in some way, at some time, and in some place.

I thought it was amazing that I found this meaningful painting in the mall, in a small store containing many artifacts.  I was memorized by the beauty of this painting that day, not just because of the beauty of the angels, but because of its size.  The painting, frame in big gold frame, was 6 feet in length and 4 feet in width.  It was awesomely displayed on the wall section of the store, along with other paintings that were secular in nature – flowers, landscapes, butterfly, and things.

Knowing my love of the angels, Raphael’s angels, my wife suggested that we buy it.  My immediate response at that time was, no, we can’t afford it.  She continued to entice me by telling me to check out the price.

As I got closer to the painting, I saw a price tag on it.  It was marked at $400, which was a lot of money at that time.  I knew we could not afford it and told my wife that, even though it is a beautiful painting and it would look lovely over our large fireplace and mantle, we could not afford it.  After all, we had three growing children and many other things that were more necessary than a painting of angels.

As we were looking at the painting and talking about it, a salesperson came over and asked us if we were interested in the painting.  I said, no; my wife said, yes.  And as we were leaving, the sales associate said that he would talk to the store manger and see if he could give us a discount on the painting.

Very hesitantly, I responded with an, okay.  And about ten minutes later he came back and announced that the manager could give us a 20 percent discount on the painting.  My mind quickly calculated the discounted price to be $320.  As I told the salesperson that the price was still too high, my wife interjected that it was a once in a lifetime chance to own this beautiful painting and that we should get it.

Reluctantly, I said okay.  The sales associate smiled and asked me to help him get the large painting off the wall.  I took one end and he took the other, and as we raised it up and placed it on the floor, I noticed a handwritten note that was taped to the back of the painting.  The note said, 50 percent off!  I showed the salesperson the note, and he said he would check with store manager.

The salesperson returned shortly and announced that the final price was $200.  I immediately thought to myself that it must have been an angel who put the note on the back of the painting without any of us being aware of it.

We bought the painting.  We had to wrap it up in bubble wrap and cardboard to strap it to the top of our small car because it wouldn’t fit in the car with all five us in there.  We also bought some tie-downs to make sure that the painting would not fly off the roof of the car on the way home.  I do believe it was the angels who helped us get it home that day.

Today, more than fifty years later, I am still in awe at this beautiful painting that has been such a large part of our family.  I gaze upon it every day as it brings back memories of my three daughters, how each one of them had pictures taken in front of the painting as they grew up – proms, weddings, and even the passing of their mother.

I just now took a moment to look at Raphael’s Angels in my living room.  I still cannot help but feel the love, the joy, the peace, which comes from that special piece of art.  And I continue to pray to the angels for their comfort and tranquility in my life.

Angelography – The Documentation

Angelography is the exploration of angels through the documentation

of their presence in all the various forms of the Arts.

As their sacred presence is recorded and documented,

so too, your experience is forever etched in the crevices of your mind,

and the fissures of your soul are overwhelmingly filled in

with the music of the angels.

You are inspired, encouraged, and moved to a higher level of appreciation,

and your life is never the same again,

because you have been touched by angel wings.

You have seen, heard, smelled, felt, and voiced the goodness of the angels. (McCormick)

From Scripture

“He will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” (Psalm 91:11)

Cherubim and Seraphim surround God’s throne, charting the boundaries of holiness. (Isaiah 6:2-3; Ezekiel 10)

Historical Reflection

From medieval stained glass to Byzantine icons, artists have documented the heavens with angelic forms, each a reflection of humanity’s longing for protection and guidance.

<> MAIN POINTS OF LEARNING

Definition of Angelography

126.  Angels have been the subject matter of many great books, songs, paintings and so on.  Angelography can be defined as looking at angels through the eyes of films and videos, books and articles, songs and poetry, paintings and statues, and websites.  Just as we use the word photography to define the taking of a “snapshot” of something or someone through the lens of a camera, so too, Angelography is the taking of a “snapshot” of the angels through the eyes of the Arts.

The word Angelography is a neologism; that is, two or more words blended together to form a new word.  In this case, Angelography comes from the word  angel combined with the suffix  -ography, which means "writing" or refers to a "field of study". It is derived from the French "-graphie," which comes from the Latin "-graphia," and ultimately from the Greek "-γραφία." This suffix is used in terms like biography, the writing of someone's life and geography, the study of the Earth's landscapes. (Wikipedia)

In this respect, the definition Angelography can be refined further to include the artistic or literary representation of angels, especially in texts, visual art, or symbolic narratives.  In a very real sense, it is the study of angels within the Arts, and by “the Arts,” we mean the following:

          A. Angels in films

          B. Angels in videos

          C. Angels in books

          D. Angels in articles

          E. Angels in songs

          F. Angels in poetry

          G. Angels in paintings

          H. Angels in statues

          I.  Angels in websites

A.  Angels in Films

127.  Angel films are sometimes discussed in relation to Peter L. Valenti’s definition of the ‘film blanc,’ a variety of fantasy film characterized by 1) a mortal’s death or lapse into dream; 2) subsequent acquaintance with a kindly representative of the world beyond, most commonly known as Heaven; 3) a budding love affair; 4) ultimate transcendence of mortality to escape the spiritual world and return to the mortal world.  Angels films have also been discussed as the product of ‘reform ideology’ in early 20th century America; as sharing similarities with ghost films; and in relation to medieval art (Wikipedia, List of films about angels) (See references in link above).

<> POETIC POINT

Angelography is the capturing of the story of angels in all their glory.

It is the perpetual record of angelic presence among us,

and the sketching of their movements across the landscape of life.

It is the art of noticing the footprints of the holy,

in the dust of our days.

And hearing their celestial voices in the loudness of life.

It is paying proper homage to their beauty, their meaning, their presence,

and knowing they have been with us always and forever (McCormick/Copilot).

<> CONCLUDING POINTS OF LEARNING

Note:  The following information, unless otherwise noted, was taken from a personal conversation between this author, Robert W. McCormick and Microsoft Copilot on December 10, 2025.

Timeline of Angelic Depictions

Ancient & Classical Era

  • Early Religious Texts: Angels first appear in ancient religious scriptures, such as the Hebrew Bible, Christian New Testament, and Islamic Quran, often as messengers or divine agents.

  • Classical Art: Early visual depictions in mosaics, frescoes, and sculptures, especially in Byzantine and medieval Christian art.

Middle Ages

  • Medieval Iconography: Angels are prominent in illuminated manuscripts, church paintings, and stained glass, often shown with wings, halos, and symbolic colors.

  • Scholarly Writings: Theological texts and hagiographies (writings about saints) include detailed angelic hierarchies and roles.

Renaissance & Baroque

  • Renaissance Paintings: Artists like Michelangelo and Raphael depict angels in grand religious scenes, emphasizing beauty and grace.

  • Baroque Statues: Dramatic sculptures and paintings highlight angels as dynamic, emotional figures.

19th & Early 20th Century

  • Romantic Literature & Poetry: Angels appear as symbols of hope, love, and transcendence in poems and novels.

  • Classic Songs: Early popular music includes iconic songs about angels, such as "Earth Angel" by The Penguins.

Late 20th Century

  • Film & Television: Angels are central characters in movies like "It’s a Wonderful Life," "City of Angels," and "Wings of Desire," reflecting diverse interpretations from guardians to rebels.

  • Modern Art & Statues: Contemporary artists reinterpret angelic forms in public sculptures and installations.

21st Century

  • Digital & Web Art: Angels appear in websites, digital illustrations, and online creative writing, expanding their presence into virtual spaces.

  • Pop Culture: Songs by artists like Sarah McLachlan ("Angel") and Robbie Williams ("Angels") continue to shape the modern image of angels.

This timeline shows how angelic depictions have evolved from ancient religious texts and classical art to modern films, music, and digital media. The concept of Angelography provides a framework for documenting and analyzing these representations across history and artistic forms.

And so, we have fulfilled the descriptive aspects of our opening definition of Angelography:

  • We have delved into the written account of angels, their nature, roles, and appearances across cultures, religion, and literature.

  • We have discovered artistic and literary representations of angels, especially in texts, visual art, and symbolic narratives.

  • And we have, by extension, documented a representation of angelic presence, theological, mythological, and, in some cases, imaginative.

There definitely is a lot to learn from these examples of angelic presence.  We have looked at angels through the eyes of films and videos, books and articles, songs and poetry, paintings, statues, and websites and viewed them from every angle imaginable and taken a snapshot of the angels through various forms of art.

Take the time to enjoy the different presentations and representations of angels while feeling the presence of your own angel to help you in your study.

<> POETIC POINT

Angelography is the documentation of invisible pathways.

The recordation of grace and the capturing of sacred space and time.

Angel blessings are remembered,

along with their supernatural power.

And we learn about the angels and their love for us,

as we read and watch what humanity has written and recorded.

We are privy to divine moments of awe,

And we are mesmerized by what we learn.

<> A Prayer

May you always make room for the truth that you behold

in the beautiful documents of sacredness.

Where you learn about angels and the things they teach you,

their glory, their awe, their messages of love.

May you always know that in the trials and tribulations of life,

you have someone near and dear,

to help you turn those moments of fear,

into times of strength and grace.

<> FINAL STEPS

Congratulations!  You're almost done with this module.  Just a couple of things to complete the unit of study.
